Individual Therapy for Sexual Addicts

Individual therapy involves regularly scheduled sessions between client and sexual addiction therapist for 50 minutes per week every week and is indicated when you feel like you have sexual problems and/or are stuck in your life. We help you to get to the root of your sexual compulsions and the underlying sexual problems and/or trauma and restore sexual health and intimacy in your life.

In individual therapy, only the therapist will know your secrets. You will be able to speak openly about your fears and sexual issues, in a safe, clearly boundaried therapeutic relationship. During your time together, you can dig deeply into your problems to understand the origin of them and what has to be done in order to change. In a one-on-one environment, you and your sexual therapist can develop an individual plan for sexual behavior changes. For some, individual therapy can evolve into group therapy for yourself and/or your spouse.

Often, the sexual therapist will take a psychodynamic and/or cognitive behavioral approach and combine other approaches according to their training and your needs. These methods primarily involve talking to the therapist with the goal of resolving your problems through understanding your pain and challenges together.

Sex addiction therapy can be brief or long-term depending on your goals, which you should determine together with your therapist.

Why do individuals with sexual problems come to therapy? There are a wide range of reasons including but not limited to:

  • Issues of depression
  • General anxiety
  • Stress, relationship issues
  • Unresolved childhood experiences
  • Emotional and sexual infidelity
  • Patterns of “love addiction” that become destructive
  • Sexually dysfunctional behaviors such as addiction to cybersex or pornography
  • Frequent visits to strip clubs, massage parlors, and prostitutes
  • Low self-esteem
  • Body issues

The end result of individual therapy? A better self-image, shame reduction and self-acceptance and acceptance of the sexual problem without denial. Additionally, a healthy sex life that does not include lies or pain for anyone involved.
