Porn is seemingly everywhere online. The Internet has made readily accessible an abundance of information and has sprung a new realm of addiction for people who are susceptible to problems of low impulse control. While not everyone who interacts with pornography may fit the definition of addict, for many people porn addiction is a real and damaging personal challenge.
What exactly is porn addiction? Porn addiction is defined as the overuse or abuse of pornography in a manner that has negative consequences for one’s life. The porn addict may find an inability to control the behavior and continues the destructive behaviors despite negative consequences. Alone with only the computer for company, porn addicts are in fact isolated from real human contact. Porn objectifies the participants and leads to a loss of intimacy.
According to the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health, approximately 2 million people are addicted to Internet sex. Cybersex can occur in chat rooms, email, news groups or pornographic websites. No matter how it is delivered, pornography can serve as a powerful trigger to the sex addict. Research suggests that cybersex and porn addicts spend at least 11 or 12 hours a week engaging in some form of internet sex.
Excessive usage of pornography often leads to sexually dysfunctional behaviors such as compulsive masturbation. Compulsive masturbation with or without pornography and compulsive viewing of porn with or without masturbation present long-standing problems for many Internet sex addicts. Whether it is through cybersex, phone sex lines, videos, porn magazines, or simply through fantasy, sex addicts can lose hours daily to the isolating activities of fantasy and masturbation. Loss of control, continuation despite negative life consequences, and preoccupation or obsession with the activity, are the characteristics of any addiction.
The sex addiction therapists at CHS help porn addicts or cybersex addicts deal with their feelings of shame, humiliation and embarrassment. Additionally, for the spouse of a porn addict or cybersex addict, often low self worth is encountered as they compare their own bodies to the images the porn addict encounters online. In both cases (partner and addict), our group therapy sessions in Los Angeles prove to be extremely helpful.
CHS in Los Angeles facilitates overcoming porn addiction to create solid, intimate relationships.
